CAGD 331 - Character Modeling

 Stylized Character - Final

Age: Mid 20s (in appearance)

Gender: Nah

Height: 165 cm

Alignment: Chaotic Whatever

Temperament: Swears a lot and bangs drums. So whatever that says.

Spirituality: Non-Religious

A drummer in a band from some alternative science-fantasy world. In that world, the rules are different. Some things are possible that aren’t here. Like a bass player with a lava lamp for a head. Technology and other things let you be who you want to be. This society somehow ends up being pretty tolerant simply because most people are apathetic enough that they don’t really care to begin with. So why do they have demon horns? Why don’t they wear a shirt? None of that matters.

This was a fun project! From the start, I knew that a lot of the detail I wanted for this character would come through in the texturing. When the assignment requirements changed half-way through, that... was still true of this character. I wanted that good good texture detail, and I'm pretty damn happy with the sculpt, too. Texturing, rigging, and beautiful physically-based rendering are kind of too hard too resist. Plus I need more practice texturing human skin.

Maybe now I can finally move on to non-punk characters.

Maybe?

Stylized Character - Concept

Option 1

Looking at my previous characters, it occurred to me that I was slowly forming a band. The faun was clearly a guitarist, Lava Lamp Head (modeled before this class) has always been a bass player, and the character established in my marvelous designer project could definitely become a lead vocalist.

Now I need a drummer. I'm thinking someone covered in tattoos, with buzzed hair. Probably going to be a human. Will have eyebrow piercings, a necklace, and some sort of cool earrings. Either large, dangly feathery ones or massive ear gauges.

I need to put some thought into designing the tattoos, since that's going to be the most interesting part of the design. The pants are going to be more intricate, covered in straps and chains.

I already started playing with this idea some. Just using Makehuman, Blender, and Substance Painter as concepting tools. Mainly I was just experimenting with how to make pants like this using cloth sim and sculpting.

Option 2

Second option is to go way back, and remake my first character model. This is Eno. She's an elf I made for a science fantasy world I was thinking up.

I modeled her before taking any modeling class, just sort of figuring things out in my own way. Basically doesn't have edge flow, but she's so low poly that it almost doesn't even matter. Modeled in blender (obviously), and painted textures by hand in photoshop.

Now that I actually know what I'm doing and have the power of Zbrush and Substance Painter, it would be really cool to see Eno realized properly.

 Option 3

My third option is to borrow a character concept from my awesome friend Bren. The character is basically a total 90s kid with an old TV for a head, wearing overalls. Definitely a great person to chill with. Bren already agreed to let me model their character, so that's gonna happen sometime no matter what. Just a matter of whether I want to do that for this assignment.

Marvelous Designer

Marvelous designer is pretty wild, but I think I'm starting to understand how to use it properly! I referenced David Bowie's look from the 1995 Outside tour to get this raggedy experimental artist. She's using a Makehuman mesh with some adjustments to the texture, and hair grown in Blender.

Faun/Satyr

I knew from the start I wanted to make an androgynous or female faun instead of a traditional satyr. Like everything else I touch, it eventually became punk. I'd like to think someone summoned this creature because they thought it would be fun, but quickly became too much to handle. All it wants to do is eat ramen and play loud music at every hour of the day.
